Random Thoughts of a News and Sports Junkie: July Edition

Before you call all those “Pokemon Go” players out for being nerds, you better check yourself.  Anybody planning to draft a fantasy football team?  Just sayin’.  I am too, but still pretty nerdy.

Do you remember all the problems in the Olympic Villiage when Russia hosted the games in Sochi in 2014?  The hotels were full of embarrassing problems.  Media rooms did not have Wifi for reporters, lightbulbs were hard to come by and even traded among athletes for things like pillows and some rooms were equipped with two toilets, but no sinks.  Now Russian track and field athletes are prohibited from competing at the Olympics in Rio, and maybe the whole Russian national team.  I have one word for you Russia:  Payback.

Ted Cruz refused to endorse Donald Trump at the RNC.  How is that a surprise to ANYONE?  There was a better chance the two would have a WWE Cage Match than hug it out on the stage in Cleveland.  Right?    By the way, that is a WWE Event I might actually watch.

Speaking of the RNC, has there ever been a bigger 3 ring circus?  The Donald Trump campaign is now admitting what most of us knew right away. Portions of Melania Trump’s Monday night speech were lifted from the 2008 Democratic convention speech of Michelle Obama.  Trump speechwriter Meredith McIver says the copied passages were due to a miscommunication. In her telling, Melania read some phrases to McIver over the phone and McIver didn’t realize they were verbatim quotes from Obama’s 2008 speech.  McIver says she offered to resign, but the Trump family asked her to stay on the job.

I don’t know much about Matt Damon, except that I like some of his movies.  I do know something about his beliefs and political views. (Damon is a Democrat and is in favor of banning all guns in the US)  I also know he has no real ties to Boise, as he is from Boston.  So it strikes me as strange that a man like Damon comes to Boise to hold a fundraiser and premier of the new “Jason Bourne” Movie.  For those who dislike Damon due to his political views, just remember, he did not have to come here or help raise money for the new YMCA.  I for one am grateful he used his celebrity status to help do some good for our area.

Nothing — I mean absolutely NOTHING — was more fun this week than beating my 15 year old son a 2K basketball on Xbox One, and listening to him whine about it for 30 minutes.  Sweet music…
