Coroner identifies two men who died in construction trench collapse

Two men who died in a construction accident Tuesday afternoon died from asphyxiation, according to Ada County Coroner Dottie Owens.

Bert Smith, Jr. of Caldwell and Ernesto Saucedo-Zapata of Nampa were working in a construction trench near Hill Rd and Gary Lane when it caved in, burying them under nine feet of dirt.  The accident happened at 5:30; it was 9:30 before their bodies were recovered.  Another man working in the trench at the time of the cave-in was able to be saved.  He was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
