This week, the University of Memphis took action on the brawl that followed their bowl game with the Brigham Young University Cougars. The Tigers suspended 12 players for games or portions of games. The suspensions lasted from ½ a game to two games.
If you have forgotten the incident, not likely if you saw it, a huge brawl broke out moments after the Tigers won. The fight escalated so quickly that the police and team officials were caught off guard. The disagreement lasted for several minutes and was shown live on television. After it was over, it was repeated again and again. Both head coaches said after it was finished that this was not the decorum expected from their teams.
BYU, a Mormon institution, said the actions may have resulted in violations of their Code of Conduct.
Memphis’ actions came several weeks after the game, BYU has either taken no action against those involved, or has not made that action public. The fight came after one of the best bowl games of the season, but no one remembers the final score. It was sudden and spectacular, and the top story of the day.
Congratulations to Memphis for their suspensions. BYU, we need to know that you have taken some action, even if you don’t want to publicize it.
