AAA: 80 million Americans leaving town for Thanksgiving

This year, a record number of travelers will leave town for turkey and all the trimmings.

According to AAA, nearly 80 million Americans, including 464,000 Idahoans, will celebrate the holiday 50 miles or more from home.

AAA Idaho public affairs director Matthew Conde said flexible work schedules have stretched out holiday travel, especially at Thanksgiving, so no matter how you go, you will have plenty of company.

The Thanksgiving travel period runs from Tuesday, November 26 through Monday, December 2.

This year’s AAA forecast adds two days – the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, and the Monday after – to more accurately reflect holiday travel activity.

The worst traffic will occur Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon.

The best traffic happens early morning on Thanksgiving Day.

Worst times to fly are Tuesday afternoon and all day Wednesday.
