Idaho Supreme Court deciding whether Boise can authorize Interfaith Sanctuary move

Arguments regarding the city of Boise’s decision to authorize Interfaith Sanctuary’s relocation were heard by the Idaho Supreme Court on Friday.

According to the Idaho Press, the Supreme Court’s decision, which is expected in the coming months, will determine whether the city of Boise acted properly in overruling a Planning and Zoning Commission decision that initially did not authorize Interfaith Sanctuary to relocate.

The court’s opinion could hinder the homeless shelter’s ability to relocate its operation from West River Street in downtown Boise to the former Salvation Army building located on West State Street.

The planned move has been a long process for Interfaith, spanning more than three years.

While the shelter says the move is essential for accommodating the city’s growing homeless needs, the neighborhood adjacent to the new location has balked at the move, citing security concerns for residents and impacts on public facilities, including police, EMS and fire services.

The city council’s decision was previously appealed by the Veterans Park Neighborhood Association and upheld by an Idaho District Court in June of last year.
