Boise State forward Tyson Degenhart was named the Mountain West Freshman of the Week for a league-leading sixth time this season, the league office announced Monday. This is the third-straight week Degenhart has been honored with the award, and the sixth time in the last nine weeks.
Degenhart averaged 18.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists this past week as the Broncos split to remain in first place in the Mountain West. The Broncos’ loss at Wyoming ended a 14-game winning streak, which was the second-longest in the nation, but Boise State got back in the win column with a home victory over San Jose State, Saturday.
Degenhart went 13-for-22 (.591) from the floor between the two games, including 6-for-11 from 3-point range (.546). He was also 4-for-4 from the free throw line on the week, and added a pair of steals.
Against the Spartans (Feb. 5), he set career highs in both points (23) and rebounds (8). The performance marked his second-career 20-point game, and included a pair of personal 8-0 runs in the first half. He finished going 9-of-14 from the floor, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range.
The 23 points are the most by a Bronco freshman in a conference game since Feb. 26, 1994, when Steve Shepherd scored 26 against Montana State. He is the seventh Bronco freshman in program history with multiple 20-point games, joining Anthony Drmic (three) and Derrick Marks (two) as the only Bronco freshmen with multiple 20-point games under Leon Rice. He is the sixth different Bronco to score at least 23 points in a game as a freshman and the first since Anthony Drmic (2011-12).
