Ada County commissioner says board was ‘surprised’ by sheriff’s resignation

CBS2 reports Ada County has released additional details in how it will select a new sheriff after former sheriff Steve Bartlett unexpectedly announced his resignation on Memorial Day.

Bartlett had been in the position for the last five and a half years. His official resignation will be on June 8.

Because Bartlett ran as a Republican, Idaho law states the candidates will be presented for consideration by the Ada County Republican Party. The Ada County Board of Commissions will then have 15 days to make a selection and it will take two commissioners for a selection to be made.

“While the entire Board was surprised by Steve’s unexpected announcement on Memorial Day, we have a duty to fulfill our constitutional obligations by selecting the strongest, and most qualified candidate submitted by the Republican Central Committee,” said Rod Beck, Ada County Commission board chair.

Chief deputy Scott Johnson is currently acting sheriff until the board makes its decision.

“We are committed to selecting a person with strong law enforcement credentials who will lead Idaho’s largest local law enforcement agency with integrity and professionalism,” said Kendra Kenyon, commissioner.
