With two months left in the year, Boise Airport has already set a new record for carry-on firearm discoveries.
The 43 firearms reported to be found in 2024 surpass the 42 discovered in the 2023 calendar year, which was itself a record for the airport.
Each firearm was discovered through an X-ray off carry-on luggage at the security checkpoint.
TSA’s firearm discoveries for this year more than double the amount discovered five years ago at BOI, with 19 firearm discoveries reported in 2019.
The record discoveries come at a time when the Boise Airport is seeing record-high traffic.
In July of this year, TSA reported a single-day record for the number of passengers screened through security, with 9,503 travelers screened.
When TSA detects a firearm through X-ray, the fate of the firearm and the traveler is up to the discretion of the responding law enforcement agency.
