October 17th debate on Proposition 1

The Idaho Statesman, in partnership with Boise State’s Institute for Advancing American Values, will host a debate on Proposition 1, the citizens initiative on the November ballot that would dramatically change how we select our elected officials.

Proposition 1, also known as the open primaries initiative, if passed by a majority of voters on Nov. 5, would change how Idaho elections are run.

It would create a multi-party open primary in which the top four vote-getters would advance to the general election.

Then, in the general election, voters would rank all four candidates based on preference, otherwise known as ranked choice voting.

The candidate with the lowest vote count would be eliminated.

Their vote would go to the voter’s next-highest choice.

The process would be repeated until two candidates remain.

The candidate with the most votes wins.

This community debate is free on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 7pm in the Boise State Interactive Learning Center.
