Mountain Home Mayor accused of “using public position for personal gain”

Mountain Home mayor Rich Sykes is being criminally accused of improperly using city resources for a home project.

According to a criminal complaint from the Idaho Attorney General’s Office, Sykes has been charged with “using public position for personal gain,” which is a misdemeanor in Idaho.

The complaint alleges the mayor in April of last year used Mountain Home city staff employees and equipment to move dirt found on or near his personal property to save time and money while the employees were on the clock and being paid by the city.

CBS 2 News reports, he faces up to one year in the county jail and a fine not to exceed $1,000. Idaho law also may require Sykes to be removed from his position as mayor.
