It’s important to take action now to protect your home

(CBS2) — With frigid temperatures and more snow this week, it’s important you take action now to protect your home.

A spokesperson with Zamzows says every homeowner should have insulated gloves, a shovel, and ice melt on hand.

“This particular ice melt is a calcium chloride so if you shovel and it goes on the lawn, totally safe, pets walk through it, totally safe, and safe for your concrete too,” said Chris Owings, Zamzows director of store development sales and procurement.

Owings says another tip is to make sure your hoses are not connected to your house in the winter.

“You want that faucet to be able to breathe so it doesn’t freeze and crack,” Owings said.

For those worried about the snow on your lawn, Owings says it acts as an insulator protecting your grass and plants from cold temperatures.

Owings says using heated pet supplies can help keep your animals warm during the winter, including heated pads and bowls.

“Heated bowls for your dog to make sure they have water, heated chicken waters, even little heaters to put in birdbaths to make sure the wild birds have freshwater, that’s really important for them when everything is frozen,” Owings said.

Zamzows even has house plants available to help you beat the winter blues.

“These winter blues kind of keep people down in the dumps so to be able to landscape indoors too is always something fun to do in the winter,” Owings said.
