Boise mayor Lauren McLean is calling on the release of body camera footage after three officer-involved shootings within a month.
McLean wrote a letter to Ada County Prosecutor Jan Bennetts on Friday to allow the city to release the footage to the public.
McLean said she understands the public’s frustration when it comes to body camera footage because it can often be months before the images are released.
CBS2 reports that typically, the Ada County Prosecutor’s Office requests that the city does not release footage during ongoing investigations.
However, McLean said she believes they can work together to meet the needs of our judicial system while being transparent with the community.
But it does not appear prosecutors will be adhering to the mayor’s request.
Prosecutors said the premature release of any evidence in criminal investigations violates the due process rights of those who may be charged and prevents a fair trial.
