Mormon Crickets Hit Southwest Idaho

 

For weeks, the U.S. has been bugging out over the massive hatch of cicadas swarming on the East Coast.

Idaho won’t see any cicada swarms, but a different insect infestation has hit the Gem State.

East Idaho News reports, Mormon crickets are a species of large katydid native to Idaho have been seen hopping across the Southwest Idaho desert.

One woman wrote on her facebook page – in the Owyhees right now there are millions of them.

The Mormon crickets pop up in different parts of the state at different times, as their hatches depend on temperature.

Typically they emerge first in the Owyhees, where temperatures are warmer, and continue hatching into the summer at higher elevations.
