Bill to Simplify Idaho’s Constitutional Carry Law Clears Committee, Heads to House Floor

Boise (670 KBOI News) – A bill to simplify the state’s so-called Constitutional Carry law — which allows most adults to carry concealed weapons without a permit — is headed to the full House for debate.

House Bill 206 cleared the House State Affairs Committee on a 13-2 vote. Hammett Representative Christy Zito, who sponsored the bill, said it would simply extend the right to carry concealed handguns in city limits, without a permit, to 18 to 20-year olds.

Greg Pruett, with the Idaho Second Amendment Alliance, spoke in favor of the bill.

“Outside of city limits, those 18-to-20 years olds can already concealed carry, as Representative Zito mentioned, with no permit,” said Pruett.  “They can also open carry those handguns anywhere in the state, including inside city limits.  Basically, what this bill does is, inside city limits, it allows them to put a coat on when its cold outside.”

Boise Representatives John Gannon and Brooke Green voted against sending the bill to the floor.

After the vote, Green said she opposed it because 18-year olds often hang out with 15 or 16-year-olds, and it terrified her to think someone might have a gun when playing video games with younger kids.
