Worthington BLOG: Why are we fighting again?
By Rick Worthington
My social media feeds are full of angry people. I have not seen people this angry since the election. I’ve had enough.
Why are you fighting exactly? Who are you mad at?
Democrats say: Kids should not be taken away from their parents.
Republicans say: Kids should not be taken away from their parents.
We agree on this. Anyone who feels otherwise is in the minority to say the least.
If you want to fight; fight about the right issue. The issue (as I see it) is legal immigration and illegal immigration. But again, we mostly seem to agree. Both Republicans and Democrats want immigration that is done legally. Sure, I might be over-simplifying things, but that does not make me wrong. Both parties want the same thing. LEGAL IMMIGRATION.
Are we fighting over building a wall? No.
There are lots of Democrats who favor the building of a wall on the southern border, most just don’t want to pay the crazy price tag that goes with it. For Republicans that claim to be “fiscally conservative,” the money is a big issue for them too. So we mostly seem to agree, again.
Hey, if President Donald Trump can really get Mexico to pay for it, I’ll be the first to stand up and tell Democrats to cheer with the rest of us. It’s just very unlikely, and most of us realize that.
Maybe it’s the folks that are on the far left and the far right that are angry…and can’t get along. But they likely never will, so my advise is this: Don’t get caught in the middle of a fight between people that can’t or won’t hear what the other side has to say. I think we can make progress on big issues without compromising principals. Great leaders find ways to do that.
