Random Thoughts of a News and Sports Junkie: Football Season

Last year I offered a number of Fantasy Football thoughts for the 2015 season.  Among them, I was ROASTED for the following trade: Tom Brady (whom at the time was looking at a 4 game suspension) for Sam Bradford (who just came of a 5 TD performance in a preseason game).  I was wrong.  VERY WRONG. You get no Fantasy Football tips from me this year.  You are welcome, Treasure Valley.

On the subject of fantasy Football, I am currently participating in 5 leagues.  Of them, 2 cost me nothing (FREE is GOOD).  Of the other three, one cost a case of beer to enter, with the winner getting all 10 cases of beer as a prize.  The other two are competitive, and cost $100 and just 20.00 respectively.  I did however draft similar teams, so I won’t be all over the map on my NFL Sunday Ticket.

Boise State is looking to get back to the MWC Championship game this season.  The easy money is to take BSU vs San Diego in the end of the season game.

Speaking of the MWC, the conference is always looking to get a team in the big bowl game at the end of the year and the big payout it offers.  I think the bigger goal for the MWC should be to actually win a couple of games against major conference opponents this year during the regular season.  The perception of the MWC is very poor among major city sports writers these days.

I’m still a fan of the Oakland Raiders relocating to Las Vegas.  Who would say no to a trip to Vegas to watch an NFL game?  Not this guy.  Can you imagine how CRAZY Vegas would be if the Super Bowl was actually held there?  OMGeee!!!

Side note on Las Vegas Raiders:  Go take a look at the Stadium proposal.  That building looks like a football palace!

NCAA rankings aside, after watching Alabama roll up USC I’m drinking the Crimson Cool-Aid.  Nick Saban likes to run the ball and always puts a great defense on the field.  His team takes very few chances offensively, and forces it’s opponents into turnovers.  That’s good football.

I am helping coach the Heritage Middle School football squads this year. (I’m not the head coach)  I’ve coached football before, but it’s been awhile since I helped with a tackle football team.  Coaching this year reminded me how much the game really is all about good blocking and tackling.  You really can scheme whatever play you want, but it won’t work if you don’t block.  Conversely, the other team will score on every play if you can’t tackle them.

My son was named Captain of his 7th grade football team this week.  Yes, I’m bragging. 🙂  It’s a proud Dad moment for me.

I’ll be sitting next to Paul J. Schneider in the Press Box this year at all Boise State home games this year.  I’m looking forward to some BSU Football History Class from “Professor Paul J” while we watch Brett Rypien carve up the Mountain West.
