It’s that time of year…irrigation canals are full and flowing again, and are very tempting to kids and adults alike. But the surface of the water is very deceiving, says Daren Coon with the Nampa-Meridian Irrigation District. He says everyone needs to understand the dangers posed by canals.
“Children learn by example as well, so it’s important for adults to stay away from, and stay out of canals as well. Then, children are not so inclined to follow the example of adults.”
Coon says what makes canals so dangerous are the temperature of the water, which is extremely cold, and the velocity of the water, which is a lot faster than it looks.
Earlier today, an 18-month old boy died after he fell into a canal off 10 Mile Rd.
