The 2014 Major League baseball season is underway. This is one of my favorite times of the year. You still have faith that your team really has a chance to do well in the upcoming season. The first week in April means the definite end of winter. The Master’s golf tournament is just around the corner and the Kentucky Derby is not that far away. As a person who works early in the mornings, it is nice to have baseball in the background while doing other work. Sometimes I will actually watch a whole game when it is important.
This is where the rub comes into the picture. I can’t remember the last time my team, the Chicago Cubs had a meaningful game. In the first game of the season, the Cubbies lost in ten innings to the average Pittsburgh Pirates. The final score was 1-0 in ten innings. The Chicago leadoff man had four hits, the rest of the team had two. The Cubs were 0-11 with runners in scoring position, typical. Could be a very long season. The Cubs are ranked 28th in ESPN’s power ratings of the 30 major league teams. I will keep the season interesting by betting lunch with my colleague Dave Harbison. He is an Astros fan. They are ranked 30th, or last in the power ratings. Could be a hell of a bet.
