I have spent more than 60 per cent of my life at this 50,000 watt radio station. Needless to say, during my long tenure, I have made some lasting and rewarding friendships. I received a letter this week from Linda Stehlik of Troy, Montana. Troy is in Montana's back country. Linda referred to a letter she wrote some 30 years ago from rural Idaho. In that letter she mentioned that KBOI was her family's only connection with the outside world in the wintertime.
At the time of the first letter Linda was married with two teenaged sons. Her husband has since died, and her sons are now in their 40's. In her first letter, Linda mentioned she lived over a 7,300 foot pass with 20 miles of unplowed roads before you reached her cabin. Her winter modes of trainsportation were cross country skis, and a dog sled. Yes a dog sled.
Her sons were home schooled and were tested quarterly at a regular school, miles away.
Linda mentions that her family's link to news and information came from YOU (me), and KBOI. She now lives in rural Northwest Montana, and she still has her dog team, consisting of Huskies, an english setter, with a chuhuahua running alongside. Most important she says, "are my radio and KBOI every morning". A big shout out to Linda and her family.
Believe it or not I remember her first letter way back in the Lon Dunn days. Her most recent post evoked memories of a younger Paul J, playing music and bringing the world to a small, snowy ranch, miles away. Nice to know we are still doing it.
